The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto collaborated with Christian Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria, Sokoto Chapter and the Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital Chapter – to host a three day free medical outreach in Sokoto Metro.
Commencing on July 4th, the surgical screening exercise took place at Holy Family Clinic and Maternity, Sokoto.
During the flag-off of the outreach, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Dr. Matthew H Kukah encouraged everyone to take advantage of the Outreach because it’s a great privilege for the people of Sokoto.
Bishop Kukah said "Everyday people die in our country Nigeria of different ailment because many don't have the fund to go to the hospital.
"This doctors have availed themselves to provide this free medical outreach to all of us not minding our religion, ethnic groups or tribe.
He added that most of the Doctors were not indegene of Sokoto and would have taken the initiative to their various states but they decided to host it in Sokoto through Christian medical and dental association of Nigeria - Sokoto Chapter (Catholics).
The Bishop quoted what the Sultan of Sokoto said during the commissioning of the Holy Family Clinic and Maternity, "Mosquitoes do not know a Muslim or a Christian" therefore, sickness does not know religion.
He encouraged the medical doctors to continue with the good work they have started because evangelism does not only belong to the religious but to every one of us through our little contributions to the society or community we find ourselves.
Earlier, Chairman of Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria Sokoto Chapter, Prof. Dan Aliyu thanked the participants of the program, adding that he believed that many will receive their healing by the grace of God.
Prof. Aliyu said that the outreach was the first of its kind in Sokoto State and it is 90% sponsored by UDUTH chapel which comprises of the Catholic Worshipers.
He noted that UDUTH does not have a building as a chapel but the chapel is rather in the hearts of the worshippers.
Dignitaries present at the flag-off were: His Lordship Most Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah - Bishop of Sokoto Catholic Diocese, Sultan's representative, Prof. Dan Aliyu - Chairman of Medical and Dental Association of Nigeria Sokoto Chapter, Dr. M.P Agu - Chairman Outreach committee.
The medical outreach ended on July 7th, 2018.
