Pontifical Mission Societies

The official missionary arm of the Church — mission awareness, prayer and support for the poorest mission churches.

Vision

Ensuring that the diocese participates actively in the propagation of Christ's mission of evangelisation through prayer and sacrifice.

Mission

Promotion of Jesus Christ's mission of evangelisation through the four Pontifical Mission Societies.

The Pontifical Mission Societies have been the official missionary arm of the Church since 1922, charged with evangelisation and charitable works throughout the world. In Sokoto, under the direction of the Local Ordinary, the diocesan director coordinates the four societies — Propagation of the Faith, Holy Childhood Association, St. Peter the Apostle and the Pontifical Missionary Union — and promotes World Mission Sunday each October.

The Holy Childhood Association, founded in France in 1843 by Bishop Charles de Forbin-Janson, invites children to help children in mission dioceses — “children helping children” — through daily prayer and small sacrifices. Today it is active in 120 countries.
