St. Mary's Catholic Church, Argungu

Site of the 1935 rural mission; closed in 1948 and re-opened as a parish by Bishop Kukah.

About the parish

In late 1934 Fr. John MacCarthy, SMA (later Archbishop of Kaduna), and Fr. Patrick Lee were sent to Argungu to choose a site, and building of the first rural mission station for work among the indigenes of Sokoto Province began in September 1935. The mission closed in 1948 and later became an out-station, until Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah restored St. Mary's to the status of a parish.
