The Light of the World

By Diocesan Communications Office

John 8:12

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus speaks these words in the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles, when great lamps lit up the Jerusalem night. Against that backdrop, his claim is bold: he is not merely a teacher about light — he is the light.

Walking in his light

To follow Jesus is to live by a light that darkness cannot overcome. In a world shadowed by fear, division and uncertainty, the Lord invites us to keep our eyes on him. When we do, our path becomes clear even when the way is hard.

Today, ask yourself: where am I tempted to settle for the dim light of my own understanding? Where is Christ asking me to trust him more deeply?

Lord Jesus, be the light of my life. Help me to follow you today, that I may never walk in darkness.
