Ever before the outbreak of meningitis that has claimed several lives in over 16 states and still counting, the health department of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, headed by REV. Sr. Christiana Umeadi OP(now late) were proactive and had begun their routine immunization against this dreadful disease.
In the last one month Late Sr. Umeadi and her medical team have covered several parts of Sokoto diocese which comprises: Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara and Kebbi. And as the outbreak got worse the health team intensified their effort.
On March 29- 31, 2017 Late Sr. Christy was roundly called, led her team to Zamfara State for the immunization exercise. They were billed to spend just a day at St. Edward's Catholic Church, situated in Gusau town. But they were overwhelmed by the turnout of people who came to be immunized hence, they stayed on to be able to attend to the crowd. Upon completion on Friday, Sr. Christy set out to return to her base in Sokoto and to continue to another location on Sunday.
Just 30 minutes after setting out from Gusau in a public transport, which had boarded, our dear Sr was involved in a ghastly motor accident at Bakura, in Zamfara State, she sustained a fatal injury on her head and died on the spot. She and one other passenger in the car lost their lives.
Her remains have since been deposited in the morgue at the Usmanu DanFodio Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto. The date of her burial will be announced on a latter date when arrangements are completed.
Her immediate family, the Dominican Congregation, the Diocese of Sokoto and all her patients are left in utter shock and disbelief but resigned to the will of God and trusting that our Sister will rise again at the resurrection.
Until her death Sr. Christiana Umeadi, OP was the Assistant Prioress General of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena, Gusau, Nigeria. She hailed from Anambra. state. She was a Nurse by Profession. She was knowledgeable, hardworking and a community-minded person.
