Celebrating A Colossus: Bishop Kukah At 12

Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria needs no introduction. He is a cleric and Bishop. He is educated and cerebral, bringing his learning to bear in all his interactions with his parishioners, the public and the government.

From his early days of sharing his thoughts through a column “The Mustard Seed” in the Kaduna based national newspaper The New Nigeria in the 70s up to the present, Matthew Hassan Kukah’s belief in Nigeria has never waned. He insists that the travails of Nigeria and Nigerians are the handiwork of those raping Nigeria to their political and economic advantages.

He is fearless and speaks truth to power at all times. He has been variously criticized by paid agents of the Nigerian governments to hush him up many times. However, the more they tried, the stronger the expression of his views on the acts of those in governance that betrayed the trust of the majority.

Today in Nigeria, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah has become the conscience of the nation. He is believed in and publicly defended by even people of other faiths when he is unfairly criticized by paid agents of government for speaking out against tribalism, nepotism and failure to protect Nigerians against killer herdsmen and other forms of violence being perpetrated by mostly criminal elements in Northern Nigeria known to the former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Today, Most Reverend Matthew Hassan Kukah marks the 12th anniversary of his episcopal ordination as Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto that covers Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina and Kebbi states, all in Northwest Nigeria.

He is being celebrated and honored for his dedicated service to our faith community his unwavering commitment, wisdom, and guidance have been a source of inspiration for all of us.
