Bishop Kukah consecrates Sokoto Diocese to the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Rt. Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah has consecrated Diocese of Sokoto to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the church concludes Marian Year today.

During the ceremony, Bishop Kukah prayed for Our Lady's intercession for the clergy, the religious and the laity for God's guidance and protection. Included in the prayer of dedication also are other Christians, Muslims and the peoples of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Kebbi states that make up Sokoto Diocese.

Bishop Kukah prayed for increased evangelization and for the understanding of people of other faith.
The life size statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary borne by the Knights of St. John was carried round the church during the Mass.

Today's celebration which combines the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary also mark the 6th anniversary of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah's Episcopal installation as Bishop of Sokoto Diocese.

Sokoto Diocese Cathedral Choir rendered the congratulatory proclamation on the Bishop's anniversary.  

Celebrating the Bishop on his anniversary on his episcopacy in Sokoto Diocese, the children's government in Nigeria has chosen the Bishop of Sokoto Rt. Rev. Dr. Matthew Hassan Kukah as its Patron. 

According to the children, Bishop Kukah is the first  person outside of government to be so honoured. They said "Bishop Kukah has proven to be not only the conscience of the nation but a true voice of the people; a voice for truth".

The children who came from Abuja to join in celebrating Bishop Kukah's 6th anniversary as Bishop of Sokoto was led by Mr. Patrick. They requested the Bishop to choose a date for his investiture. Bishop Kukah blessed the children and prayed for their safe return to Abuja.
